In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his first Presidential Inaugural speech said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
As a college student in 1989, Brian Scudamore was fearless. Boasting a grand total of $700 and a pickup truck, he began collecting junk and old stuff that people needed discarded from their homes. Now in more than 100 cities and four countries, he couldn't have known it would become a $100 million a year business. Originally known as The Rubbish Boys whose slogan was "We'll Stash Your Trash in a Flash," the company is now known as 1-800-Got-Junk. Their company name and contact number are one-and-the-same. It sounds so simple. His entire business was built on simple ideas; so simple, in fact, Scudamore's own father didn't believe the plan would succeed.
Scudamore says he did not have a business model. He had no high-tech strategy. He had no equipment and only the $700 to invest. Today the junk business has made him a multi-millionaire over many times. What Brian Scudamore did have when he started out was a clear-cut vision for what he wanted to accomplish. He also hired people and knew to treat them like family, a business family. He was also convinced that everyone has junk and many have neither the time or ability to get rid of it themselves so his company does. He knew that hard work and elbow grease could get you far in life. He could have easily sloughed off the idea of starting the company: How easy to say, "I'm too young. I lack capital. I don't know enough," and on and on. Fear of any of these would have nipped in the bud the birth of his highly profitable business
Some of you have a real grip on the possibility that God has placed in your heart. You are afraid, however, that you don't have enough money, enough talent, enough know-how to pull it off. So what that you don't have a complex business model or business plan? Admittedly, you don't have $50k or $100k to invest in it. Can you start with $5k? Are you willing to work hard? Maybe it isn't the right time or place right now. But for some of you, nothing is holding you back except your own fears, most of which are unfounded. Is the power of the Holy Spirit within you or not? Satan relishes our fear and he is a master at dangling it before us and sustaining it in our finite minds.
Cast away all notions that you cannot. Set aside your fear. Roosevelt was right. So was Paul. Fear is not of God. It stifles His calling on your life. So crank your truck on this Monday morning and drive toward your dream, goal or God-call. What is it that He wants to do through you? "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans for good not evil, plans for a hope and a future." (Jer. 29:11) Listen to the voice of Truth and not the junk-talk Satan throws your way.
"For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Tim. 1:7
