Have you ever wondered why the minority in many organizations have a dominant voice? The goal of most healthy team work is to allow the majority of those who make up the group to have influence and a voice that is heard. I have observed that for many organizations, this is not the case.
In just about every team effort that I have observed over the years I have noticed that there are three strong characteristics that suppress the majority.
The Strong Voice Person
There are some people on teams that simply overpower others by their voice. If they are not load they simply dominant any and all conversations. There are others on the team who have great ideas and insights but they cannot get a turn at the microphone because of this type of person.
The Strong Presence Person
There are other teams that are dominated by one or two personalities due to their strong presence. They may not do all the talking but if a decision is to be made the entire group seems to pause to be sure that this type of person gives their approval. Advice is always appreciated, however, there is no one on any team that is right 100 percent of the time.
The Strong Resource Person
This team member is Mr. or Ms. Money Bags. A decision cannot be made without this strong personality approving and allowing the resources of the team to be used. These type of people do not use money alone, they often control many types of resources, or at least the team has given them that authority.
Why should all teams work to overpower a minority rule? Ken Blanchard puts it this way, "None of us is as smart as all of us." Therefore, when any single person dominants, it kills the power of the team. Henry Ford said, "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." Minority rule is no good for any teamwork effort!
